Such "liturgical indifference" is refreshing in the face of the incessant western mania to thematize and instrumentalize liturgy for its own ends, so that one can "get something out of it." Like the reply of George Leigh Mallory when asked why he climbed Mount Everest--"Because it is there,"he answered"--the Christian east prays to God simply because he is. One constantly hears in the west that people do not go to church because "they don't get anything out of it anymore." What
one "gets out of it," let me repeat what I have said on other occasions, is the inestimable privilege of glorifying almighty God.
