Chewing Food and Kneeling

Two of the most grace-filled moments on my recent retreat happened again and again.

The first was the practice of kneeling before the Invitatory psalm prior to Vigils.  It was a short time of recollection (30 seconds perhaps), but it allowed one to gather the thoughts and prayers to be offered to the Lord.

The second practice was the custom of silent meals (accompanied by table reading).  While I certainly missed the conversations of the Brothers at table, the silence gave me the opportunity to doubly ruminate, chewing both my food and the Word that had just been prayed in the Divine Office.
